Should the weight I use to calculate protein requirements be the weight I should be, which would better represent the muscles and organs you are trying to benefit from the protein, or my current overweight status?
Hi Gary we are starting to get into a complex area so simply think of fat and protein as two seperate things. Body fat is an energy source, the body will breakdown fat and burn it as energy when we place enough demand on it by exercising etc.. Protein is a building block that repairs and rebuilds muscles after they have been stressed by workouts, heavy exercise etc
However you have touched on a very important point. If you are working out strenuously, as you are, and you are also counting the calories you are taking in there is really no room in your diet for poor food of any kind. You will need all the calories in your budget to ensure that you are getting all the good stuff, vitamins, minerals carbs, protein etc.. Even one chocolate or desert may take up valuable calorie space needed for that additional shot of protein etc..
If you have not done so already take a look at the artice I posted on AC under Grand River Fitness. Just search protein and you should find it. There are many ways to get the extra protein needed but keep in mind these are suppliments not food replacements. Probably the mst common of the protein supplements is Whey. Most people I know get a along fine with Whey but it is milk based and some peoplefind it hard to digest. So best buy a small container to start with until you find one that works for you ... I hope that helps .... All the Best ..... Alex
