Shopping for YOUR Personal Trainer

Here at Grand River Fitness we sit and evaluate your needs and your capabilities. I’ve heard many horror stories myself, but all we need to do is ask the right questions; both trainer and client.

First thing you need to do is browse the gyms in your area. Some may have an atmosphere that’s just not for you. So don’t force yourself to like it. But maybe there’s one that suits your personality and helps motivate you because you enjoy the setting it offers.

Second, talk to a trainer. Get a feel for who they are and whether they will connect to you personally. Ask if there are other trainers and what their attitudes are like and what they specialize in. You won’t want to work with someone who’s main focus is body building while all you want to do is lose a couple of pounds.

Third, are they certified? It will vary depending on where you live. In Canada, you want to find someone who is canfit certified. Extra education through college and university is also nice to see.

Fourth, are they keeping your goals in perspective or are they making the goals for you? Some extra help with your goals are okay, but if they want you to body build because it’s what THEY want, then that’s not a trainer for you.

Of course the questions concerning price and availability will come, but that’s after you’ve found the trainer you’re looking for.

So if the next step is finding a gym or trainer, keep these questions in mind while looking around. It may help you with your goals in the end!

Good points James, Trainer certification is key, as there is no regulation on this industry anyone can call themselves A Personal Trainer but I know from personal experience that a CanFit Pro certified trainer is top notch and individuals can loose their certification pretty quickly if they do not meet annual supplementary and advanced training requirements. So individuals looking for a trainer should not only ask to see certification but also check on the date of last renewal.  Thanks for the tips........
