Active Cambridge

If you love cycling in our city then you have most likely heard the name, Cliff VanClief and the Hub Bicycle Shop.  Cliff and his family run store have become synonymous with bike riding due to their dedication to helping others get involved in cycling and for the sheer love of the two-wheeled, human powered pursuit.  Thousands of Cambridge residents owe a positive riding experience to Cliff; and now our community has the chance to help the local advocate.

 

On August 25^th ,2010, Cliff’s mother, Nancy, passed away after battling cancer for nearly 4 years.  One year later, Cliff has the chance to celebrate his mother’s memory and to repay a debt of gratitude to all of the friends, family, and community members who helped him through one of the toughest times of his life.  Vanclief’s goal is to raise $20,000 for the Cancer Centre at the Grand River Hospital by joining the fight against cancer and participating in the “Ride With Lance”.

 

Grand River Hospital is proud to welcome Lance Armstrong back to Ontario for an unprecedented fourth “Ride with Lance”.  This event is an exciting, rare opportunity for cyclists to ride with, and spend a day in the company of cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong while raising awareness and much needed funds for the Cancer Centre.  

 

For Vanclief the opportunity couldn’t be a more perfect tribute.   Nancy Vanclief was Cliff’s biggest cycling fan and loved watching her son pursue his passion.

 

“Mom came to every bicycle race she could and always supported me in my cycling, she loved the store and was always sending me emails on anything cycling related she noticed.”

 

The beneficiary of Cliff and Lance’s efforts, Grand River Hospital, provided Nancy’s cancer treatment and works continuously to provide programs and patient care for those living with cancer.  Vanclief feels his efforts pay a little toward his large bill of thanks to the centre.

 

“This is my way of trying to give back to my family, the treatment centre, and to give hope to other families who will have to experience this.”

 

On Saturday, August 27, 2011, Cliff and Lance Armstrong will take to the road with an exclusive group of cyclists in the fight against cancer but they need your help to raise the funds.  A list of fundraising events and a link for online donations has been set up at
